Technical Difficulties in Ritaville

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I have to tell y’all we are experiencing some crazy growing pains that have caused some technically difficulties in Ritaville. I am pretty much at my wits end, but me and my crackerjack staff are working diligently on the problems. Wait, I lied…but I am trying to figure crap out slowly. I am not a computer person and I have certainly never blogged before and looks like all the traffic blew something up.

I should have things figured out by tomorrow so today we are going to do an Open Post! Yes…it’s Rant Wednesday. What are you pissed off about? What makes you mad? Go off…

Before I leave y’all…I have to show you something!

I couldn’t help but notice my boyfriend…err, I mean Brandon Jenkins WHO STILL DOESN’T FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER, updated his Facebook page with a little thing I thought was interesting!

I can’t say for sure, but I think this might have something to do with us…and I am happy to know his beard doesn’t feel like a Brillo Pad. He so wants me, I can tell.

Also, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day I wanted to post a picture of the nicest guy I know, Matt from the Bleu Edmondson Band:

Ok, ok…I am just kidding, besides the Lucky Charms guy is way too tall and way too friendly to be Matt, so that is just absurd.

Have a great day and leave a rant at the beep…

Here's my bitch. If an artist isn't going to come to the merch table, let the merch guy know and we will buy our crap and leave. We just like our pictures taken. I know a meet and greet is not included in the price of the ticket but don't make us stand around looking like desperate groupies. If you ask the merch guys they always say "I don't know" so you buy shit anyway. Just say yes or no. Text each other. Don't have people standing around and then act annoyed.

I'll rant about Galleywinter. It's used to be an amazing site to learn about music but now all it is is match.com for losers that don't have any real friends in the real world. All people do is have cyber sex with each other, wack it off on webcam and then get into jealous love triangle fights with each other. Try leaving the house and talking to live girls sometime you losers.

CCR's music going downhill? Really? I'll have to disagree with that wholeheartedly. CCR's has proven that they are actually growing and expanding musically, unlike most of the bands left in their wake. I'll put it like this: "When a revolution starts, it usually starts with a lead ship (CCR in Red Dirt Rock / Pat Green in Texas Country) and many "pirates" join in their wake and try to sail under their flag (too many to list in Red Dirt / Cory Morrow, Kevin Fowler, etc. in Texas Country.)If the lead ship doesn't stay on their toes and stay fresh, they're likely to be over taken by the pirates in their wake…. Pat Green has already sailed out of Texas Country waters and is now sailing in the pussified, cheesey, pop-BS water that is Nashville, leaving a raging pirate battle in his Texas Country wake, which I personally believe RRB has taken the lead. CCR on the other hand, they change and evolve with the tides leaving the pirates LOST in their wake." You can call it "going downhill," but personally, I feel they're just hoisting their sails a little higher and shouting "no quarter" off the bow…. Just my opinion.

"All people do is have cyber sex with each other, wack it off on webcam and then get into jealous love triangle fights with each other."

    Wait, what? Is Slappyville back?

I want to bitch about how awful the PG show in Corpus Saturday night was. PG had some falling out with Concrete Street, so the show was in a parking lot on the seawall. It's still winter. A relatively cold winter. It wasn't crazy cold in the city, so Concrete would have been so comfortable. But the windchill and the water made it feel like 40 degrees when you're standing on the fucking seawall with the salt and wind slapping your face all night long. All those poor little diesel sniffers and their shorty shorts were so cold.

Also, there were five hours worth of opening acts. So people stood in a parking lot, freezing their butts off (with absolutely no place to sit at all) for five hours before Pat took the stage and played for all of one whole hour. By the time he got up there, though, most of the people were gone. I was desperate for him to shut the hell up so I could go home. You could practically walk right up to the stage and not even bump shoulders with anybody else, it was so dead.

The best part is how big of a failure the whole show was. I don't know what the falling out with Concrete Street was, but I'm sure it was over money. No way anybody made real money Saturday night. Maybe if they had hoodies at the merch table, they'd have cleaned out. But the tickets were so expensive, that few people showed. Most of those left early without spending their life savings on ice cold $6 beer. They were so desperate to make it look like there was a crowd that they opened the good section up to people with General Admission tickets. That didn't work, so they let all the people coming out of the hockey game in for free, too. They only succeeded in pissing off all the people who spent a fortune on tickets.

Perhaps I'd have been less miserable if I didn't have a sprained ankle and have to stand the entire time. The people I was with wouldn't leave early and I was DD'ing, so I spent five hours sober, in pain and hating everything and everybody involved in that fucking show. Longest damn night of my life. Oh, and Casey D was playing. I don't like him.

I would stand up and defend Ragweed's music and the changes they've been through musically over the years, but I'm sure I would get mowed down because of the "wife/manager" label. All I can say is that they follow their hearts when it comes to music they put out. We fight a good fight to not allow over priced tickets from promoters and venue managers. We put in a lot of miles to try and reach markets that most people don't give a hoot about and we try to always come back to show respect to the venues and fans who were there when we started. Do we put together our festivals in OKC and Ft. Worth to try to make money? No. If you think you can pay 10 – 15 bands and only charge a $40 ticket for the whole show and make a profit, you're not keyed in to accounting very well. The boys and I have ALWAYS tried to do what we can to help the new guys who are beating the pavement in the vans like we did for the first 7 years that we were on the road.

Is it a lot of work? Yes. Is it a TON of fun? Yes. Does the music change? Yes. Do people change? Yes. Will we keep doing it no matter what? Yes.

Okay, I feel better now. Off to see the Drive By Truckers rock Gruene Hall!

    3. Ragweed releasing shitty tunes
    4. Having to deal with idiots at RRB shows
    5. Listening to Bart Crow. The dude just plain sucks.
    6. Paying $5.00 or more for a beer at a festival
    7. Every band using more lights and smoke than Pink Floyd
    8. Ryan Bingham. Blah, Blah, Oscar, Blah. No one will care in a month
    9. The quality of talent at Steamboat Musicfest.
    10. Charla Corn. really?
    11. Roger Creager's 10 year old set list
    12. Cory Morrow telling us to smile and hug someone. Is he still on too much coke or what?
    13. Honeybrowne—— Hey Fred, it's over!
    14. Radio Free Texas playing anyone that sends them a record. Most of the stuff the play is horrible.
    15. Every artist that puts out a record with 2 good songs and a bunch of filler.

I'll stand behind RFT and what they believe in… Giving the artists a voice and the fans a choice. Until I found RFT I would of never found such a wide variety of Texas Music. Granted there are some artists that I don't care for but that's the joy of having a mute button.

And unlike some other site (that will remain unnamed cause I'm just nice like that) we don't have benefits for "Oh damn, my cat just died" or " My wife/hubby slept around and got a STD" benefit or even " I just want your money to buy adult play toys" benefit Even tho that sounds like a pretty awesome idea (just sayin).
But hey to each their own..

And I love Ragweed but I was a lil disappointed with the last CD. 51 Pieces is my fav off there. And I can't wait for the next CD, where they honor the artists from OK… I think I got that part right. And also if I'm not mistaken they stand to make nothing off the next CD, but that might be a rumor.

And one last thing for now that I want to bitch about is NAME DROPPERS!!!!! Look, if I don't like you now I'm not going to like you then either. I can't believe I'm going to quote Shania but "That don't impress me much". And it makes me want to say DILLAGAF.

So, I'll end my lil rant with ..

    Art in a box

@last anonymous. For years they’ve been playing the whole "in-group" thing. This blog is proof of that. How can you attack someone for not being original but then praise Stoney? In-group and out-group. That's why you see bands like EYB making it, they got off the traffic jam that is this scene and found their own path. But still, it’s not good enough for some to at least respect because they're not a part of the in-group. The out-group has figured it out though. By staying an outcast they are able to stay truly unique. Ryan Bingham didn’t make it by networking with the “independent” local brass, he found his own path. On the other side the in-group tours together again and again, writes together again, and again… they are becoming a boring product manufactured by groupthink. How many more times is the same song going to be recorded by two artists? Do they flip a coin to see who gets to play which song when they’re on the same bill?

But hey, good for the in-group. They’ve established themselves in a region and will have successful careers. There’s nothing wrong with that and no one wants to live in a van forever. Sure they unknowingly limit themselves artistically through groupthink and will probably never win a Oscar but hey,… who doesn’t want to hear the 856th verse of Boys From Oklahoma? Damn, Josh Abbot, get some original shit man. I feel as if I’ve heard that sound before.

Rita, Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to blow off some steam or even just say what you honestly feel! This is why I have become addicted to your blog! You know what just makes me laugh… which I believe it is the one’s getting denied by musicians… saying “all musicians cheat”. My baby daddy isn’t cheating on me. I can flat out guarantee that! I love my baby daddy very much! I will not ever stand for cheating. Shit, I don’t understand why “musicians” are so different from everyone else in the world… They are just as human as us, “non-musicians” are!!! What is the big deal anyway – they play music for a living! Omg people it’s not like they are in Hollywood!!! It’s not like you hear on E!

The Diesel Sniffer comments about people who have met their spouse at concerts… I met my man at a show he was playing, I was dating someone at the time, and so was he. We started out as friends, we enjoyed each others company, and turned into much more (After our relationships had ended of course!)! Just because you met your husband at McDonald’s, doesn’t make you fat. Just because you met your husband at a sex shop, doesn’t make you addicted to sex (Okay, maybe a little bit- ha). Point is doesn’t matter where you’ve met the love of your life, just the fact that you met them is amazing<3. Ok, Yeah Yeah Yeah, All you minions are prolly laughing your ass off… well I don’t care! ;-P However, I met my man on a completely different level… I wasn’t looking for anyone. We just ended up great friends, who fell in love! It depends, in my opinion on whether or not you’re DSing around or just out for fun and happened to run into the love of your life.

Some of you DS’s are just plain nasty! Some of you… I honestly wonder do you even respect yourselves… Well, obviously not or some of you wouldn’t have the attitude well, if you didn’t want your man to cheat he shouldn’t be a musician… Oh you bitter bitter whore : ) Well, you have either gotten denied by a musician… or found out, he does have someone back home… and he could careless about you… all you are to him is a half decent lay! Or he just got caught up in the moment and total regrets his decision to shack up with some whore. And then there is the single one’s living it up and getting all they can out of you and dumping you to the curb when they are done. Yeah, they’ll call you… But only when they are in town or if someone better has come along. You know, I have had a 40 + woman come sit on my lap after my man got done playing a show in Victoria while at a Whataburger… just to be closer to him! Some DS’s have no shame! It’s sad, but I have to admit, you do offer some great entertainment!

the comments on this blog have become just embarrassing. One of the aspects of Texas music that has helped endear it to all of us is that it used to be a close knit group. Everyone helped everyone out and no one talked tons of shit about other bands…Rita herself is just blogging. but all you "industry" people who make your "clever" little comments are hurting your own profession. you should really be ashamed of yourselves. you've started a slippery-slope by exposing things that will cause fans to become jaded. fans don't need to know what goes on behind the scenes; they should just be able to simply enjoy the music. who cares if they put artists on pedestals?

it's just a shame that, instead of everyone being pals and supporting each other, all of you are so pissed off and competitive that you have to talk crap about the same people you shake hands with and ask "how's it going?"

  • Reply March 18, 2010

    Claire

Listen man, just because you're reading rants regarding the little insignificant scene of Texas music doesn't mean that this is the only place where "ranting" is happening. Ranting is human! Whether you're a business man, chef, musician, actor, librarian, or sales guru, there will always be an identifiable clique associated with that sub-culture representing competition, jealousy, frustrations, and the list goes on. Sure, we can all shake hands, and say "how's the music going, man," but it's just a facade. Do you think a conventional "business man" in the 9-5 working field really shakes his competitors hands, asks how his business is doing, and really gives a shit (or is genuinely thrilled) for his overflowing success?! Hell no.

The problem lies here (my rant), yes, music is art…but as soon as you start collecting revenue for your art, it becomes a business, and once it becomes a business it becomes a mater of making money, because as much as ever genuine artist hates to admit it, every single living human being HAS to make money to survive…period. So when it gets the point of making your "art" your "business," you need to throw a big handful of bullshit ideologies like "but I'm not feeling truuuuue to my artistic vision" out the window, because simply put, that artistic vision just might not be selling to the public demand. It's a real world out there, people, not Candy Land.

Yeah, Eli Young Band, Pat Gruene, Miranda Lambert, and whoever else has "sold out" (so to say as the fans call it)…they've sold out" to "make it", and as long as they keep pursuing their art a business, they NEED to continue to "sell out." THOSE artists should be admired more so than the 30 year old econoline van Joe-blow musician who's still living off a weekly allowance from his/her parents and NOT taking responsibility for his own life. Grow up, people!

Do you have to sell out to be legitimate in my eyes? No, of course not…but get a day job to support yourself, do your music on the side, and don't complain when the crowd at your show wants to hear nothing but Pat Gruene covers. The people I have the most respect for as artists are the ones who work a day job from 9-5, haul ass home, load up their PA and guitar, head out to work a gig for a measly $50, and don't get home 'till 2am just to wake up in another 5 hours to start his/her 18hr work day all over again. THAT guy, THAT musician, is working his ass off in dedication to his art, and I applaud him.

Ok, there's my rant, Rita. "Bad Mood Betty" Claire Cunningham standing up for the " 9-5 working" peon musicians signing off…

I have a complaint and its about Stephanie Briggs. WTF man she SUCKS! I can't stand to listen to the new Ragweed cd because her voice drives me nuts!! WTF does Cody see in her? What am I missing? I've been to 7 CCR shows last year and had to sit through her horrible performance. Not only that she spent the majority of the time on stage with the band. She sucks! I can't stress that enough. Its almost like they have adapted to her style of music, which doesn't even fall into this scene. I've read other people's opinions of her and stuff and they mostly feel the same way! Boring/horrible vocals/totally out of place performer. But I've heard that Cody defends her and keeps pushing her into the scene. I've even read it on GW a while back. I even hate the freaking album art on the new CCR cd. I'm just disgusted that she has driven CCR in the ground. Just my opinion. But that's how I see it. GO AWAY STEPHANIE BRIGGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Reply March 19, 2010

I like Stephanie Briggs just fine. I think she has a great voice and in general her music is really good. Ya blue hair is scary when every other girl on stage in this scene wears sun dresses and cowboy boots singing along with a chicken scratch fiddle. I'm not too huge of a Ragweed fan so I have no idea if she did or didn't single handedly "driven CCR in the ground". That's a pretty tall order for one person though.

1.) Ryan Bingham is talented. May not have a voice suited for everyone's taste but he definitely deserved that Oscar.
2.) Miranda Lambert used to play in Dallas with her dad. She worked her ass off to be where she is today and it makes me smile when she wins an award. She's different and she's exactly what the country music scene needed!
3.) Casey Donahew sucks. Period. His wife is a joke.
4.) Any guy that can play a few songs and sing, without a couple of people making fun of him, thinks he's a "Texas Country artist". Give me a fucking break. Get a real job and stop waiting around for your record deal. It isn't going to happen.
5.) There are a gazillion girls in Texas and Oklahoma that think they're "somebody" because the know someone associated with a band. Newsflash ladies–you're still no one and nothing. Find a new dream.
6.) I lived with a girl that was obsessed with Texas Country Music. I mean OBSESSED! I would introduce her to a friend and she would make a total ass of herself. Embarassing.
7.) Mike McClure never gets the amount of respect he deserves. Talented songwriter and producer! I own every single one of his solo albums and there's some good stuff on those!
8.) Seth Candan, you are NOT a Texas Country artist. You are a JOKE. And so is that ridiculous excuse of a "girlfriend" you have at every single show. She will ruin your career. Just ask Mek…
9.) I personally don't care for Jason Boland's (ex) wife. Super nice when you meet her. Gets drunk and somehow formulates this idea in her head that you are trying to have sex with her husband. No one is trying to have sex with him but YOU, K!
10.) Since when are people "too good" to sign autographs? Mother fucker, your "fans" spending money on your shit is the reason you have that amount of money in the bank. Trust me, it's not because of your looks or education or 9-5 job you attend every day. Quit being cocksuckers and sign a fucking autograph for your fans.
11.) Mr. Phillips, you aren't fooling anyone. We all know you're kind of a shithead. So does Kandace. It's a good thing you're funny sometimes.
12.) Why is just about every single person in Texas trying in some way to be associated with this "scene"? It's ridiculous. You know where you're going to be in 10 years? Looking for a REAL job to pay for the 3 kids you accumulated all over this state while trying to be popular. You know where those people that you were following are going to be? Doing the EXACT same thing. Which means you will BOTH be losers. Stop it.
13.) Sean McConnell is a talented songwriter. So what if Wade gave him his stamp of approval? He deserves it. He's not just popular in Texas. He's popluar anywhere east of Arizona. Do your homework before you talk shit.
14.) Josh Abbott–Bart should have kicked your ass when he had the chance. Quit telling everyone you can kick his ass. You can't. Bart is mean when he wants to be. I know. I went to Tarleton with him and his GORGEOUS wife! You're the fat kid that everyone made fun of. You may sell out venues, sell records, and be on the radio in Texas and possibly Oklahoma but 5 years from now no one will know who the hell you are.
15.) Bleu, on behalf of all of us, PLEASE find another job. We're tired of your live shows. They're obnoxious. You scream, whine, and most importantly, DON'T sing. If that IS your version of singing, stop it. My ears have bled long enough.
16.) If you want to see some talent, check out one of Josh Grider's live shows with his trio. I wasn't a big JG fan until I randomly attended one of their shows this past summer. Now I catch them any time they're in town! They are FANTASTIC and you can tell they enjoy every second of it.

Sorry, Im jumping back on the Briggs bandwagon although its definitely driven by a beat horse. I think if anything the whole Briggs deal has enhanced and made CCR grow musically as artists. Ive seen it as Ive followed them throughout the years. You can hear it when you listen to the new cd. Everything shouldnt be so cookie cutter people. I hope CCR continues to take their talent to new levels. It makes it worth going to shows for me.

Whatever. Keep kissing Ragweed ass. She is horrid and everyone knows why she's still around. Funny how she doesn't seem to play with anyone else. She does bring down the vibe of a Ragweed show. She should take her folk music to some coffee shop with the rest of the dirty haired bitches with hairy armpit.

She isn't "still around," so everyone lighten up. She is back to the obscurity of the Austin-alt-hippie-green tea-Sunday night acoustic gig at Tavern life.

My mini beef is these guys that aren't musicians. They wait until college to pick up a guitar, learn 3 chords, write a shitty song rhyming words like bluebonnet with galdonet and expect people to kiss your ass and treat you like you are Eddie Van Halen.

You want to be respected as a musician than learn how to play your instrument.

    "Whatever. Keep kissing Ragweed ass."

You apparently missed the point and play Constantly on repeat. People need to evolve so things dont become stagnant. Aspiring people do that.

I hope they enjoyed their anonymous ass kissing. I even applied "their balls are next" lipstick.

Luckygirl's post is awesome, and josh grider does have real talent. Too bad it is buried behind the josh abbot's of the world.

Ha! No Ma'am. Rita wouldn't touch that story with Watkin's 10 inch…errr, you get what I mean. Not in a billion years. :) Please refer back to my very first blog entry. That fear still stands!

    makes my ears mad

I have a bone to pick Ms. Ballou. I attended an Aaron Watson show last night and all I have to question is WHY DOESNT HE JUST SHUT THE HECK UP AND SING??? Do you know if he thinks every dang concert is his own special Behind the Music? Seriously we get it. You love your kids, you make money for unlimited amounts of diapers and fuel and formula. If I wanted to hear how he wrote a song about his wife on his honeymoon and she didn't want him to bring a guitar on that trip blah blah blah blah I would ask the merch guy if he wrote an autobiography to go along with all 34,856 tee shirts up there.

Now don't get me wrong, I love me some honky tonk kid but if I'm paying 4 plus dollars per beer to jam out at a concert…thats what I want to be doing. JAMMING OUT! Not watching VH1 Storytellers featuring Aaron Watson. Every show I've seen in the past 6 months has the same story line. Kids, wife, kids, random story about Jesus, kids. I swear one time I went to the bar, went to piss and came back to my spot and HE WAS STILL TALKING.

So Rita what do I need to do to get him to just stand up there in his cowboy hat and boots and just sing? Should I be that person in a bar with a poster board that says MORE SONGS LESS STORIES?

Nice work, Dr. Ferguson. But, I am left wanting to know more at the end about Chimerica. What is Americas commitment real to China and vis-a-versa? The Neocons who still have influence in Obamas Admin., what will they have to say about that? This film was good, but it definitely needs a sequel.
